Governor’s Island
Earth Block Press

PUBLIC SCULPTURE INSTALLATION
COLLABORATION with SKY MILNER

New York City  / 2013

A custom designed and fabricated compressed earth block press installed on Governor’s Island in the East River as part of a summer-long sculpture garden organized by art festival Figment. Dirt was sourced on-site from unwanted high clay content soils excavated from (then) new 40 acre park development on the south side of the island, designed as an undulating earthen blanket draped over the mounds of rubble from demolished military housing it was too expensive to cart off the island as the site is converted from military to civilian use. The overly high clay content rendered the blocks somewhat unstable, but also made for an easier process of infinitely recycling the dirt from bricks to pile to bricks and back again for public play across the summer.
